leaning out

yours truly
ms. figure USA 2004
i had someone ask me recently whether or not the good clean eats meals would be a good option for someone looking to "shred out" - or get leaner.
my answer: it would depend on several factors: what his/her nutrition is like now, how lean he/she is now, how far he/she is from competition, the intensity of his/her workouts, etc..... there is no cookie cutter diet for anyone, including body builders. this "diet" (i hate that word but you know what i mean) would be a good place to start... then he/she could tweak things depending on how the body responds. our menu items are gluten-free and relatively low-carb with an emphasis on lean protein and fresh produce. each good clean eats meal has anywhere from 15-25 grams of carbohydrate. carbohydrates are crucial for fueling performance (preferably clean carbs). some body builders are more concerned with aesthetics than they are with how they feel and/or perform (as a former ms. figure competitor i was one of those unfortunates. i was extremely lean... but i was miserable).  i read something that miranda oldroyd wrote and it has always stuck with me: "i have never seen an athlete improve their performance across the board and get fatter at the same time. chase performance. eat for performance. train for performance.... everything else you are looking for will come along with it."    that has been absolutely true in my case.
